PVFS Release: 2.7.1

The PVFS project has a new minor release, version 2.7.1. This release includes additional support for the latest linux kernel versions, improved performance for a number of metadata intensive workloads, and improved support for multithreaded use of the system interfaces. It also includes a number of critical bug fixes. See the download page for more info.

Google Summer of Code Project Ideas

PVFS 2.7.0 Released

The PVFS project has a new feature release, version 2.7.0. This release includes additional support for a number of high-performance networks, namely Myricom MX and Cray Portals. We also provide a number of feature improvements to the Infiniband networking layer, a new two-dimensional distribution for TCP networks, immutable file support, and better support for user-specified layout of data over storage objects. We also include support for Linux kernels 2.6.22 and 2.6.23, as well as continue support for older kernel versions. See the download page for more info.

PVFS BOF SC '07

Join us at the PVFS Birds of a Feather session during Supercomputing '07 next week. The BOF will be held Wednesday (Nov. 14) from 5:30 to 7 pm. We will have presentations on the following topics:

PVFS deployment practices on large-scale systems, including the PVFS deployment on the new 100 teraflop BGP system at Argonne, presented by Kevin Harms.
PVFS as a platform for ongoing research, including OSD integration by Pete Wyckoff, Active Server and File System simulators by Walter Ligon III.
Recent new features in PVFS and community discussion of potential features in the coming year.

Ultra-Fast PVFS Transport at Ames

Troy Benjegerdes has demonstrated PVFS over Wide Area Infiniband RDMA services. Troy will be demo-ing the WAN link at Supercomputing '07 in the Ames Laboratory booth, where PVFS clients will be communicating over the BOREAS and Internet2 WAN links to the PVFS servers running at Ames lab. PVFS on MIPS

With the acquisition of a MIPS64 based 6000 processor SiCortex machine at Argonne National Lab, we were able to install and test PVFS on the MIPS64 cores running linux. Read more about the Argonne's new SiCortex machine.

PVFS 2.6.3 Released

This incremental release includes fixes for large mpi parallel workloads where data corruption occurred, and fixes with spurious crashes in 2.4 kernels. Also fixes kzalloc configure checks on older kernels. You can download the release from the ftp site. See the download page for more info.

PVFS 2.6.1 Released

This is an incremental bug-fix release from 2.6.0. It includes bug fixes for build failures with certain configure options (--enable-fast) and fixes for build failures on particular platforms (such as ppc64). This release also provides support for the linux kernel 2.6.19. You can download it here. See the ChangeLog for specific changes made since 2.6.0. If you are doing a major upgrade from a previous release (such as 1.5.1 or 1.4.0), please see the release notes for 2.6.0 as well.

PVFS 2.6.0 Released

We've got a new release out with many bug fixes, and some new features. You can download it here. See the ChangeLog for specific changes made since 1.5.1. Some of the major changes include:

A new TROVE method that uses pthreads instead of AIO, and can provide significant performance improvements over the default trove method which uses AIO. To enable the alternate trove method, see the TroveMethod option entry.
New server config options that allow tuning of the flow buffers, provide root squash and read only capabilities.

Also, there are a few important things to be aware of with this release:

Notice that we've changed the release name of PVFS slightly. This release is PVFS version 2.6.0. What was previously referred to as PVFS2 1.x.x is now PVFS 2.x.x. This allows us to encapsulate the design version number in the leftmost digit, instead of as part of the name. See our versioning faq entry for further info.
As with 1.5.0 and 1.5.1, the storage format is different from the 1.4.0 version and earlier. If you are upgrading to 2.6.0 directly from 1.4.0, you must migrate to the new format. See this faq entry for further information. If you are upgrading to 2.6.0 from 1.5.x, then no migration is necessary.

Updates for PVFS v2 driver in ROMIO

In August, MPICH2-1.4.0p1 was released. Since then, we have found and fixed several bugs in the ROMIO driver. If you are using MPI-IO to access your PVFS volume, you should apply this ROMIO fixups patch.

PVFS2 1.5.1 Released

This is a minor release from 1.5.0. It fixes a build problem on systems with Berkeley DB version 4.2 and older.

NOTE: As with 1.5.0, this release provides a new storage format, and requires that storage locations created with versions 1.4.0 or older are migrated to the new format. See this faq entry for further information.

PVFS2 1.5.0 Released

We've been working hard on improving the performance of metadata operations in PVFS2, and have a new release as a result. This release also includes new support for OpenIB, and better 64 bit platform support in heterogenous environments. We also include many bug fixes and other minor feature improvements.

NOTE: This release provides a new storage format, and requires that old PVFS2 storage locations are migrated to the new format. See this faq entry for further information.

PVFS2 1.4.0 Released

The last few months have seen several new additions to the PVFS2 code, most notably an attribute cache rewrite and improvements for short I/O operations. We've also fixed lots of bugs and improved the logging and error reporting.

SC 2005 Events

Some of the PVFS2 developers will be in Seattle for the annual Supercomputing conference.

On Sunday, Nov. 13th there will be a Parallel I/O tutorial, covering all the tools available for high-performance parallel I/O. We'll cover PVFS2, Lustre, GPFS, MPI-IO, HDF5, Parallel-NetCDF, tuning, analysis, benchmarking. Should be fun for everyone.

Tuesday the 15th we will host our 4th annual PVFS2 Birds of a Feather session. It's been a hit the last few years for both attendees and developers, so stop by and say hello.

PVFS2 1.0 Released!

As part of the development team, we're announcing PVFS2 version 1.0 here in Pittsburgh at the SC2004 conference! PVFS2 is a GPL/LGPL based parallel file system for cluster-based applications. It logically groups any number of storage servers into a coherent file system for use by client nodes, specifically tailored to handle efficient access to large shared files. PVFS2 supports access via an MPI-IO interface for high-performance parallel applications, but you can still mount it like a regular GNU/Linux file system for traditional serial applications and management. The PVFS2 project is conducted jointly between the Parallel Architecture Research Laboratory at Clemson University and the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory. Please feel free to give it a try!

PVFS2 Birds of a Feather session at SC2004

PVFS BOF at SC2003

The PVFS birds of a feather session at the SC2003 conference will be held at 5:00 pm, November 19th, in room 36-37. Everyone is invited to attend! We will have some brief presentations covering status and future direction of both PVFS1 and PVFS2. We also hope to answer questions and hear as much feedback from the community as possible.

PVFS Demos at SC2003

PVFS2 developers will once again be in attendance on the show floor at SC2003. The Argonne National Laboratory booth will include a live demo of scientific visualizations off of a PVFS1 volume. Rob Ross, Rob Latham, and Neill Miller will be available there to answer questions. The GSFC section of the NASA booth will host movies and slides demonstrating the architecture of PVFS2 and the use of some of its management tools. Walt Ligon and Phil Carns (of Clemson University) will be answering questions at that display.
